The Forgotten Room

The Forgotten Room

I find it strange that most rooms in a home are designed for other people.

The living room is for guests, who visit maybe once a week. The dining room for family. The kitchen, technically yours, but serves others first.

The bedroom is different. The bedroom belongs to you, and surprisingly most people never get around to thinking about it like that.

Give it a thought. We can spend weeks choosing fabric for a sofa, or have multiple iterations for a single sofa cushion that a guest may sit on three or four times a year. We spend a fortune on the flooring of a house, a product whose sole purpose is your sole. The dining chairs, the one perfect light in the hidden right corner of a living room that we may cross three times a day. But the room, the bed we fall into every night, the room we wake up in before the day takes over… that room gets whatever is left over.

Does this happen because no one sees it? Because it's not Instagram-worthy? The rest of the home is shared space that gets compliments, but there is no social reward for getting your bedroom right. Do you recollect the last time you said to someone, "Oh wow, what great sheets." The bedroom has become functional, a storage space… storage for clothes, storages for charges and storage for things we don’t know where to put. Bedroom is no longer personal.

That is a shame. Because that room does something no other room does. It's where you begin your day before anyone asks anything of you, and end your day after everyone has stopped asking. It is a place where you are not performing or catering to anyone else. No meetings, no hosting, no small talk — just you, your true version. You are there without an agenda.

The more connected we are, the rarer such places exist. And that is why it is so valuable. Media talks about wellness and slow living as habits or rituals to incorporate into your life — but we don't need another habit. We need a room that feels like ours.

That room exists. The bed is an extension of you. Treat it like that.
